Adult male cockroaches, P. americana, are better fliers than adult females. This dimorphism in flight capability is underscored by dramatic differences in flight muscle morphology and biochemistry which appears, developmentally, at the terminal molt. Adult male flight muscles have 3-4X the mitochondrial volume density and one-half the ratio of thin to thick filaments than do adult females. Adult male muscles have a specific activitiy for oxidative enzymes 3-4X greater than females; male muscles resist fatigue to stimulation at flight frequencies for more than 15 minutes while females fatigue within 10 seconds! I will present evidence to show that it is the humoral environment of the muscle during development and not innervation that permits this unusual developmental transformation.
